Guide  /  The page after the click

Fieldline

Should Google Ads go to the homepage or a page built for the call?

Send the ad to a page about the job they searched. Send people who searched your company name to the homepage.

Two visits

The homepage is a front door, not the ad

The homepage introduces the company. It lists the trades, the area, and the way to call. It is also full of other doors. That is useful for someone who already knows you.

A Google Ad is a person with one problem, usually on a phone, who has not decided you are the company. If the ad named a water heater and the next screen is a tour of the company, they have to confirm you do that job and then find the number. A lot of them leave. You already paid for the tap.

You can see it without a lab. The search terms are the right jobs. The clicks are real. The calls are thin. Calls that start from the Google Business Profile, where the number is the point, still turn into booked jobs.

The page

Same job as the ad, number first

The first line names the same job as the ad. The phone number is tappable before they scroll. The cities match dispatch. Proof sits next to the number: the license, a few reviews, a photo of your own work if you have one. Say what happens after they call. You confirm the address and the next opening.

A no-heat call and a system replacement are both on an HVAC menu. They are not the same visit. The emergency page is about today. The planned page can carry photos and what the job includes. You do not need a new page for every slight rewording of the same job. You need a new page when the job, the urgency, or the next step is different.

No coupon, and not every ad uses this page

A homeowner with a leak needs to know you do that work and that a person will pick up. A discount is a different business. You also do not need to strip every link off the page as a rule. The failure is a menu that competes with the phone number. A quiet footer is fine.

Local Services Ads never open this page. Those calls start on Google’s own unit. Building a page and pointing only those ads at it does nothing. This decision is for Google Ads, where you choose the words and the page.

Someone who typed your company name already chose you. Send them home. Using a stripped call page for your own name often looks like you hid the company.

The leak

How you know the page is the problem

Compare clicks on the job terms with calls from those clicks. Compare calls from the ad with calls from the Business Profile. If the terms are right and the calls are not, the page is the first place to look.

If the terms are full of jobs you do not want, fix the terms before you blame the page. Do Google Ads work for contractors? starts there. A slow phone loads the same way. Check the missed-call log before you rebuild anything.

One strong page per job you are willing to buy ads for. The headline matches the ad. The number is the first action. Emergency and planned work are split. Your name still goes home. Call Pages are those landings. Schedule a call when you want the click and the next screen checked together.
