Fieldline

How do I show up in Google AI Overviews?

Google can quote a page it can index. There is no extra file to add, and no way to buy a place in the answer.

The box

Same search rules, no special ticket

On some searches, Google puts a short generated answer at the top, with links to pages it used. Google says these overviews often do not appear. They show when the system thinks a summary helps beyond the regular results.

For a lot of field-service searches, the top of the page is still the ads and the map. “Plumber near me” while the water is on the floor is usually that page, not an essay. An overview shows up more often on a broader question: what to do before the tech arrives, repair versus replacement, what a service-area company should state in public.

Google’s own documentation says the usual rules of search still apply. The page has to be indexed, and Google has to be allowed to show a snippet. There is no new text file and no special markup you must add. Meeting the rules does not guarantee you will be shown. Anyone who promises your company will be named is selling past what Google offers.

The page

Most field-service sites were never written to be quoted

The first screen says the company is trusted and local. It does not say the trade, the jobs, and the towns the trucks cover. A summary cannot cite a mood.

The questions callers already ask are missing. How soon you can get there. What you do and what you do not do. Whether you travel to that city. Those lines belong on the page for that job, in normal sentences, near the top. Google says one question can trigger several related lookups. A page that only says “full range of services” answers none of them.

The phone, the name, and the area have to match the Business Profile. Important words have to be real text, not a picture of a paragraph. A leftover setting that tells Google not to index the page, or not to quote it, opts you out.

Two prizes

The profile helps the map

Reviews, the right category, a real service area, photos of real jobs. Do that because the map is where a lot of calls start. Do not expect the profile alone to put you inside an overview.

A published 2026 account of a general contractor in the Seattle area is a useful caution. Months of profile work increased direction requests and calls from the listing. The same write-up said the company still was not in the answer lists being tracked. The map moved. The generated answer did not come along for free.

If the name search and the job search disagree, start with why your business does not show up on Google. Other tools, including ChatGPT, are not AI Overviews. Clear pages and matching facts are the same raw material. They are not a second website, and they are not a guarantee in either place.

Eligible

Can Google quote the page at all?

Check whether the important pages are indexed. Read the page as a stranger. Can you state what you do, where, and what happens when someone calls, without opening a menu? If you cannot, the summary cannot either. Search a question your customers ask and see whether an overview appears at all. If it does not, you are not losing a slot Google never opened.

Write the jobs and the area in sentences. Make the profile and the site say the same things. Remove the block that tells Google not to quote you. Then wait for a recrawl. There is no switch that forces the overview to name you.

Search Patch is the one-time look when the site was never set up for AI search. It does not promise a place in the box. Schedule a call when you want that look against the jobs you run.
